Olympic Agenda 2020

“The 40 detailed recommendations are like individual pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, which when put together give us a clear picture of what the future of the Olympic Movement will look like”.

(Excerpt from the introduction of the Olympic Agenda 2020)

Olympic Agenda 2020 is the strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic Movement. Its shaping was begun in December 2013 when the newly elected President of the IOC, Thomas Bach, took on his commitment to give the IOC more relevance and success. Following a year of consultations with stakeholders of the Olympic Movement, external experts and the public, during the 127th session of the IOC in 2014, December, the Olympic Agenda 2020 was adopted unanimously. Its recommendations are currently being implemented.

Some of the key areas of the Olympic Agenda 2020 are:

  • changes in the bidding process by encouraging candidate cities to present projects that best matches their sports, economic, social and environmental long-term planning needs;
  • reducing the cost of bidding;
  • moving from a sport-based to an event-based programme;
  • strengthening the principle of non-discrimination on sexual orientation by modifying the 6th Fundamental Principle of Olympism.
  • launching an Olympic Channel to provide a year-round media platform for sports and athletes;
  • strengthening good governance and ethical principles with regard to changing needs;
  • striving that athletes remain at the heart of all the 40 recommendations and that the protection of clean athletes becomes one of the main principles of the IOC’s philosophy.
